New categories debut for data journalism, audience engagement, AI, and events

E&P Magazine (Editor & Publisher) is now accepting submissions for the 2025 EPPY Awards, the premier competition honoring excellence in digital journalism. Under the new tagline “Digital excellence. Editorial impact. Economic resilience.” this year’s awards reflect the ever-expanding reach of the craft — across platforms, formats and communities.

Founded in 1996, the EPPYs have evolved from honoring early online news sites into a showcase of the most compelling, creative and impactful digital journalism today. From podcasts and newsletters to social video, data storytelling and audience engagement campaigns, the awards celebrate how news is created, delivered and experienced in the digital age.

Past honorees include major outlets like CNN, NBC News, The Boston Globe and NPR, alongside small-but-mighty local newsrooms, nonprofit startups and standout college publications — all united by their commitment to public service, innovation and truth.

What’s new in 2025: Journalism that connects and sustains

The 2025 EPPY Awards introduce new categories that reflect today’s realities:

“For nearly 30 years, the EPPYs have evolved with the industry — from early web reporting to today's multiplatform storytelling,” said Mike Blinder, publisher of E&P. “These new categories reflect where journalism is heading: more creative, more interactive and more committed than ever to serving its communities.”

This year’s additions spotlight innovations in audience engagement, event-based strategy and sustainable revenue models, including:

  • Best data journalism
  • Best use of AI in journalism
  • Best newsletter
  • Best short-form vertical video
  • Best podcast episode or series
  • Best use of archives or historical journalism
  • Best audience engagement strategy
  • Best local subscription or membership campaign
  • Best live or virtual event strategy
  • Best revenue-generating event

A jury of journalism’s most trusted voices

Each year, the EPPY Awards are judged by a diverse and respected panel of media professionals, educators, and thought leaders — ensuring entries are evaluated by those shaping the future of journalism. The 2025 judging panel — currently being finalized — will again be chaired by Christian Hendricks, managing partner at Extol Digital and president of the Local Media Consortium.
