From Tim O’Rourke, vice president of editorial innovation and AI strategy for Hearst Newspapers (HNP):
We’re excited to announce that Nina Moothedath has joined the Hearst DevHub — Hearst Newspapers’ editorial innovation team focused on visual journalism, data visualization and AI initiatives — as part of the Hearst Journalism Fellowship program.
“This fellowship exists at the intersection of technology and journalism that I’m most passionate about,” Moothedath said. “It’s a thrilling opportunity to learn from and work with a team that not only excels in using collaboration and innovation to improve accessibility to information, but cares deeply about doing so.”
The Hearst Newspapers (HNP) DevHub works with local teams such as the San Francisco Chronicle, Dallas Morning News, Austin American-Statesman, Houston Chronicle, (Albany) Times Union and newsrooms across Connecticut, Illinois, Texas and Michigan. The team is focused on local news, and its journalists build projects such as election live results sites, tools such as the the Texas Heat Tracker and California Fire Tracker, data-driven analyses that help readers understand their communities, and a collection of self-service templates that allow journalists to publish interactive stories without having to rely on coding support.
Moothedath is a two-time graduate of the University of Southern California, where she earned a master’s degree in communication data science and a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She previously held data visualization and video roles at Yahoo and NBCUniversal.
“We’re thrilled to have Nina as our next fellow,” said Danielle Rindler, senior director of data and visual storytelling at Hearst Newspapers. “Her front end development experience, passion for local news and interest in helping to operationalize visual storytelling embodies the DevHub ethos. Over the next year she’ll learn from some of the best local data journalists and editorial engineers.”
The Hearst Journalism Fellowship is an intensive program focusing on journalism in a changing digital world. The visual journalism track position sits on the DevHub, spans a full year in San Francisco, and allows the journalist to work with Hearst newsrooms across the country. Fellows receive training, mentoring and real-world experience alongside top journalists who use cutting-edge tools to tell stories through data, video and more. Hearst Fellows are full-time employees with competitive salary and benefits.
Moothedath was raised in the East Bay Area and will work out of the San Francisco Chronicle’s new headquarters in Jackson Square. Her early work will focus on interactive storytelling and data visualization projects alongside Hearst’s local journalists across the country.
“Local newsrooms are a lifeline for their communities, bringing critical information to the people who need it the most,” Moothedath said. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that the projects I’ll work on will support both the dedicated journalists in these newsrooms and the many readers who depend on their coverage.”
