Fifty years ago this month, members of the pressmen’s union at The Washington Post sabotaged the paper’s printing presses and beat up a foreman, kicking off a strike that would evolve into one of the most contentious — and consequential — labor battles in the history of American newspapers.

At the center of the action was Mark J. Meagher, the paper’s general manager, who strategized against the union and later served as president of The Washington Post Company. He was 93 when he died Oct. 6 at his home in Gimhae, South Korea.
