Freedom of speech is one of the greatest achievements of the Founding Fathers. They understood that if the people were the ultimate rulers, not kings or despots, they must be able to criticize the government and its officials. Like the other freedoms embodied in the U.S. Constitution, freedom of speech has some limits. Using that freedom to defame or libel another party can lead to being sued. These concepts are taught in journalism schools, and publishers, editors and journalists understand where to draw the line.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, newspapers have delivered both types of content for over a century. Television took content one step further with motion, sound and color. Today, video content has exploded across multiple TV platforms and escaped from the TV environment to be available almost everywhere and created by almost anyone.

The Boston Globe is evolving how they report and deliver the news and expanding geographically and technologically to serve their loyal readers and reach today's more diverse audiences. The Globe has focused on building its digital presence for many years, resulting in more than 245,000 digital-only subscribers. And in April 2023, the Globe launched "Boston Globe Today," a 30-minute news broadcast jointly produced with the New England Sports Network (NESN).

However, it is equally important to know where those local advertisers spend their ad dollars and plan to spend future dollars. Once upon a time, newspapers had an easy-to-work gold mine: classified advertising. Then, the internet and new technologies made the recruitment process more accessible, and suddenly, the gold mine’s ceiling collapsed, and newspapers lost a lucrative revenue source. Fast-forward to the 21st century, and there are more sophisticated technologies and opportunities for newspapers and all media to re-open the recruitment gold mine with a robust job board.

Since its founding in 2012, LION Publishers has proactively provided a comprehensive offering of training programs, hands-on advice and other resources for its members, which now total more than 480. Most are small and local, and approximately 90% operate a digital news platform. Sixty-five percent of the members are for-profit newsrooms, and the other 35% are nonprofits.

News outlets are constantly challenged to counter purposeful disinformation with journalistic integrity and verified facts. In response to the increasing falsehoods about the 2020 election results, NPR created a small team in early 2021 to report on the epidemic of disinformation. When their stories received positive feedback, management made the group permanent as the NPR Disinformation Team.

A journalist’s job can be exciting: uncovering a critical lead for a new story or elbowing aside a gaggle of other media pros to question a government official. Too often, the media focuses on the demise of newspapers and the expanding news deserts nationwide. It is certainly a transition of note, but another transition that deserves more coverage is the effort to recruit and train the next generation of journalists. How news is delivered is changing, but the journalist's role will remain critical to gathering, writing and providing editorial commentary about the news.

Despite widespread attacks on those principles and fundamental changes to the news industry, 77% of U.S. journalists responding to a 2022 Pew Research Center survey said they “would pursue a career in journalism again,” 75% “are extremely or very proud of their work” and 70% ”are very or somewhat satisfied with their job.” Conversely, the surveyed journalists were not blind to the turmoil in their industry.
