As traditional revenue streams dry up in the media industry, there is a growing interest in funding journalism through philanthropy. The Local Media Association (LMA), with support from the Google News Initiative, aims to explore this source of funding with the launch of the Lab for Journalism Funding.

As part of the 2020 International Newspaper Group (ING) Leadership Networking Summit, ING and E&P decided to collaborate on the first annual ING/E&P Operations Allstar Awards, kicking off a partnership live at the Summit, which was scheduled for Sept. 18 to 20 in Chicago. Winners were to be announced at the Summit, but then our whole world changed when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and the Summit and awards ceremony moved online.

Founded in 1871, the Helena World is one of Arkansas’ oldest newspapers, yet it nearly met its demise on Sept. 6, 2019 when its owner, GateHouse Media, decided to close it. Amazingly, on the same day Chuck Davis and Andrew Bagley announced they had acquired the World. The men became the newspaper’s first local owners since 1981.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit earlier this year, it knocked out an already-struggling news industry, causing advertising dollars to plummet and newsrooms to layoff staff or to close entirely.
Despite the ongoing struggles brought on by the pandemic, civil unrest and a volatile U.S. presidential election, news companies found innovative ways of boosting their bottom line so that they could continue to serve their communities.
